This heat map shows the Barred Owl identifications captured by one Indianapolis Haikubox. This customer plotted her Haikubox data (see more of her Tableau graphs) which show that one or more Barred Owls sang nearly every night, 8pm -5am, from May through July in both 2023 and 2024.
What else has she learned about her birds? Her yard backs into woods with a creek and she's enjoyed learning the "schedule" of elusive birds like the Common Nighthawk and Cedar Waxwing.
"Our Haikubox shows they're around each season, but we had not spotted them by eye. I was able to look at Haikubox observations to figure out the best days/times to go looking, and found each one within a few days. The whole experience made me feel more connected to my home and the creatures that live nearby."
Barred Owls, Common Nighhawks, and Cedar Waxwings avoid feeders. Haikubox data and alerts helped this Haikubox owner know when to get outside to see and hear them.
Her data also show the patterns of visiting seasonal visitors like the Great Crested Flycatcher. These birds were active in the same months as the Barred Owl, May -July, but they start singing when the owls finish up at around 5am, and are vocal throughout the day. And you can see this pattern repeated in 2024, but with a bit more vocalizing later into the summer.
