Fun Kids Podcast

The Fun Kids Podcast Network is a great series of shows that help kids learn and be active. Earlier this year, Haikubox's Amy Donner talked with host Adam Stoner about bird spotting, how Haikubox works, its goals for world domination (just kidding, but wouldn't it be great if there was a Haikubox in every garden/backyard?), and what "bioacoustics" means.

"So you used a very big word there, which is bioacoustics. What does that mean?" asked Stoner.

"If you take the word apart, you'll hear "bio" and you'll hear "acoustics." And the "bio" has to do with biology, so anything that's living. That's plants, that's animals, that's even things you can't even see, like the germs that make us sick and things like that. And then the "acoustics" part is sound. Anything to do with what you hear, the sounds we make, that's all the field of acoustics. If you put the words together, it's about the sounds that animals make and how they hear those sounds, and what they're trying to say." said Donner.

Stoner talked about what his own Haikubox has helped him discover, "I found this absolutely fascinating. I've had it in my garden now for about a month, and it's been, as you said, listening to birdsong around the clock. So far to date, it's heard 11,270 Robin calls, over 10,000 Blue Tit calls."

You can listen to the podcast from the Fun Kids website. This is part of the Activity Quest series which teaches and then encourages activities kids and parents can do together. In this episode families are encouraged to get outside to find wrens!
